Spain scores hole in one as most popular country for golf holidays
Sergio Garcia, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, José Maria Olazabal and of course the legendary Seve Ballesteros: all magnificent golfers and all with one thing in common – their home country of Spain. And it’s no wonder the country has produced such great champions, given the excellent facilities available throughout the mainland and its islands. Just last week this was endorsed by new figures that were released showing Spain as the number one destination for European golfers looking to play a round on holiday.
According to the report, 28% of golf holidaymakers chose Spain, with 12.7% heading to the Costa del Sol, 3.9% to the Costa Brava region, 3.2% packing their clubs for the Canary Islands and 8.7% headed to other areas of the country on their golf holidays.
It’s easy to see why the country is such a draw for golfers. For example, the Costa del Sol boasts more than 50 courses and more than 320 sunny days a year on which to enjoy them. There are courses that suit all abilities, from beginners to scratch golfers and green fees range from around €25 to nearer €100 for some of the more high-end courses. If you really want to feel like Seve Ballesteros, be prepared to pay around €300 to play a round at Valderrama, where the Spanish golfer captained Europe to Ryder Cup glory in 1997.
If you are planning a golf holiday in Spain, look out for deals to save money on green fees. For example, many courses will offer cheaper deals to groups as well as in low season. Some will also throw in free buggy hire and offer discounted rates for early bird and twilight golfers if you’re willing to go out that bit earlier or later.
Most golf clubs will allow you to hire clubs but if you want to make sure you’re at the top of your game by taking your own faithful set, give us a call when booking your holiday and we can arrange for them to come with you on the plane for a small fee.
If Spain is not the golf destination for you, the survey also revealed that the second most popular golf destination was Spain’s Iberian neighbour Portugal with 17%. It boasts many courses in the beautiful Algarve region. Third on the list with 16.1% was Great Britain and Ireland; Turkey was favoured by 7.5% of golfers; while France made it an all-European top five with 7.1%.
