11 Things That Only Happen When You Go on Holiday for the First Time
So school’s out for good, and you and your friends have decided to celebrate with a well-earned holiday with a touch of hedonism. The world is your oyster, and who knows what the future holds after you’ve stepped out of the school gates? When it comes to your first holiday, though, we have a pretty good idea. Here are 11 things that will only happen when you go on holiday for the first time.
1. Survive a passport drama
Check, check and triple-check your luggage. One of you will have left their passport behind and need to make a dramatic dash home to get it, while the rest of you promise to ‘wait in the departure lounge’. Just where did the departure lounge get all those beaches and nightclubs from, anyway.
2. Get horrific but hilarious sunburn
‘Nah, you don’t need sun cream, it’s for wimps’ — get set to hear this immortal line. Then prepare to watch the person who uttered it frazzle and fry in the heat. It will all remind you of last summer’s barbecue, which made you the most popular person on the street. That was a golden time, wasn’t it? This will be more ‘crimson’.
3. Purchase ‘unique’ souvenirs
On the souvenir hunt, you’ll think you’ve found something unique. Then you’ll travel home only to discover your friends have all bought the same thing. It cost them less as well.
4. Get in an argument over something pointless
Someone drank the last beer in the fridge without giving the rest of you a heads-up. Somebody keeps leaving hairs in the sink but won’t own up to it. The stage is set for a titanic showdown to unravel the answers. And the biggest question of all: why does anybody care?
5. Misjudge money and budget badly
You’ve done all the calculations as to how much you’ll need — and underestimated by a million miles. Not to worry! You only have another 13 days to go until you return to the comforts of home. Has anyone got a tin opener?
6. Discover clothes that suddenly don’t fit when you arrive
It happens every time: that dress or shirt fitted you like a glove when you packed it. It then magically grows a size too small once you reach your destination. What’s going on?
7. Get a terrible tattoo
You’re on holiday, living for the moment, and decide to get inked up. On the plane home, letting that late night tattoo parlour loose on your arm suddenly doesn’t seem such a bright idea. In comparison, laser treatment seems like the biggest ‘light bulb moment’ you’ve ever had.
8. Make new best friends (for one night only)
You’ll meet a random local and get on with them like a house on fire. You won’t remember their name. You won’t keep in touch. You don’t plan to see them again. They know it and you know it. But for that one evening, you’re BFFs.
9. Get lost
You have the Google Maps app on your phone. What could possibly go wrong? Hang a left and you’re there… at least, you were supposed to be.
10. Eat something odd while your friends laugh at you
Away from home, you’ll always try the local delicacies. It’s not a Bush Tucker Trial, and you won’t win meals for all the other camp mates. However, you’ll earn their eternal respect… once they’ve all stopped laughing!
11. Meet people you’d never encounter on a night out in Dublin
You’ll always meet someone with an amazing story to tell; someone who’s been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt, then done it all over again just because they could; or someone with some quirk or personal branding point that makes them the coolest person on the planet. Bonus points for befriending someone with a snake!
