It’s the time of year when we say thanks to those who brought us into the world — and have kept us in line while we were exploring it. In honour of our beloved mothers, we take a light hearted look at things Irish mammies will say when they’re on holiday. You’ve probably even heard yourself utter some of these immortal lines.

    1. ‘Don’t be acting the maggot! You’re making a show of yourself!’

Departure lounges are often busy and crowded. You’ll often hear these lines trotted out by parents the airport over when the kids are running around at the airport.

    2. ‘Would you look at your man there, the eejit!’

Stag parties are a common sight at the airport. This phrase will get a solid airing if someone’s had a bit too much to drink. It may also be deployed at the destination itself if someone has gone ‘mad on the drink’.

    3. ‘The sun is splitting the trees!’

Once the family is successfully off the plane and has arrived at the resort, it’s time to give an honourable mention to the weather.  Fun science fact: the hot sun can also ‘split the stones’, too.

    4. ‘Insta- what? I suppose it’s the whole go?’

This is one for the modern age. If any of the youngsters are Instagramming by the pool, mammy isn’t likely to be 100% sure of this new thing that’s ‘all the rage’.

    5. ‘Have you enough cream on? Don’t come crying to me when you’re as red as anything.’

Whether you’re poolside or beachside, the Irish complexion needs some protection. And your mammy would be the first person to dissuade you from foolhardy behaviour.

    6. ‘Put some togs on under your clothes… you’ll be glad of it later.’

Whether you’re planning a walking trip or going souvenir shopping, remember that you’re still on holiday! Many a mammy has been insistent on wearing trunks almost everywhere during your break.

    7. ‘That’s some get up you have on. Are you going out in that?’

You’ll most see this line heading your way if you or any of the family are old enough to be hitting the party scene, or if the outfit for sightseeing or the beach leaves much to be desired or very little to the imagination.

    8. ‘Sure what odds. We’re on our holidays!’

You’ll mostly hear this statement when making judicious use of an all-inclusive buffet! It’s bought and paid for, so you may as well make the most of it!

    9. ‘Where did this day come from at all? Glorious!’

Even if the weather is unsurprisingly spectacular while on holiday, sometimes it still seems to come as a bit of a shock. This phrase is particularly popular if the sun wasn’t blazing from the instant it appeared over the horizon.

    10. ‘It’s good to get away, but it’s great to get home all the same!’

There’s no place like home. With this statement, and a clap of the hands when landing in Dublin Airport, you know the adventure is coming to an end and chat about ‘the rain coming on’ will surely follow in the not-too-distant future.
