  • Cancun From Below Sea Level

Couple in a spa with a sea view in Cancun, Mexico

With swim-up cocktail bars and luxury spas that offer views of the Caribbean Sea, it’s no wonder the local hotels are hugely popular, and that more and more of us are discovering the appeal of resorts like Cancun. But there’s so much more to Cancun and the surrounding region than reclining on a sun lounger with a margarita in hand or snorkelling in the hotel pool (not that they aren’t immense fun!). Venture below sea level and you have a whole new world to discover, so why not go on a holiday with a difference and try the Caribbean, Central American-style, with some diving?

    Sign up for scuba diving

Always wanted to dive below the waves and swim amongst reefs and fish? Well, sign up for a scuba diving lesson and you can do just that! You don’t need any experience to get started. There are plenty of PADI-certified instructors available who can teach you to make that memorable first dive.

Once you’ve mastered the technique, you’ll be spoiled for choice by the awe-inspiring destinations to visit. The creatures that live between Cancun and Isla Mujeres are rich and varied. You’ll be able to swim alongside all kinds of sea life, including angelfish, turtles and moray eels.

If you’re feeling bold, you can head an hour southwards to Playa del Carmen and go cage diving with sharks. Seeing the sharks swim casually by from the safety of the cage will fill you with admiration and awe at these beautiful creatures.

    Visit Cancun’s Underwater Museum

See a display of artworks and help to conserve the natural reef formations by taking in the Cancun Underwater Museum (or MUSA). This relatively new site was conceived in 2008 when local conservationists made plans to create a museum that would be transformed into a coral reef by nature.

MUSA features more than 500 sculptures across three different galleries and is a real must-see for visiting tourists. Dive into a serene, surreal art exhibition for a unique experience that will always carry with you.

Bag a catch of the day!

Come face to face with some of Mexico’s coastal marine life by going on a deep sea fishing tour. Head down to the local marinas, where you can set sail for Cancun’s azure waters with quality fishing gear and bait at the ready.

While you’re getting to the perfect spot to cast off on the boat, you can enjoy refreshment such as a couple of beers. Once you’re there, you’ll have a chance to catch a variety of fish, including barracudas, marlins, wahoos and bonitos.

The successes and near misses are a great talking point. There will be lots of opportunities to make new friends while you travel to and from the fishing spot. It’s the kind of trip that appeals to people of all ages.

Enchanting places like MUSA are one of many reasons why people look to Mexico for a Caribbean break with a difference. Book yourself a holiday with Falcon and get in on the action.
