The Best Cancun Excursions
Looking for things to do in Cancun? Make the most of your break by taking an excursion to a nearby area. Cancun is the ideal place to stay due to its location and unbeatable range of Platinum hotels, like the beachside Riu Cancun and Riu Palace Peninsula, but taking a day out to explore other areas is well worth the time. You’ll see more of Mexico, without having to transfer from hotel to hotel all the time or spend large chunks of your holiday on a bus. This is our guide to some of the best Cancun excursions, so that you can get even more out of your Mexico holiday.
Swim in Rio Secreto’s cenotes
Cancun is known for its many cenotes – natural sunken pits that reveal a clear pool of groundwater. These pits vary in size and were once used by the Mayans to worship and communicate with the gods. Use your Cancun holidays to take a day trip to Rio Secreto in Yucatan and you’ll soon discover why these pools were believed to be so magical.
During a three-hour tour of this underground water system you can swim in its mineral rich, bright blue waters and explore the whole cave system. As the longest semi sunken cave system in Yucatan, there are a full 12 kilometres of waters to explore here, but it’s so quiet that you’ll feel as if you have the whole place to yourself.
Walk around a bat cave at Xcaret Park
An eco-park with a difference, Xcaret Park is one of the best things to do in Cancun and its surrounding areas. Take a short drive to Playa del Carmen and time your visit to arrive in the afternoon to catch the park’s evening show. This is a fantastic family activity in Mexico and gives you and your kids the opportunity to swim with dolphins, see butterflies up close and, if you’re brave enough, take a walk around a bat cave!
Experience Mexico’s wildlife on Contoy Island
One of the most memorable Cancun trips you can make is to Contoy Island. This small island allows only a set amount of people to visit per day and is home to friendly manta rays, tropical birds and a number of other animals. You’ll also come across some spectacular coral reefs here. Spend your day snorkelling or walking around the island and see how many different species you can see during your day trip.
Dive to see Cancun’s Underwater Museum
The Cancun Underwater Museum is just 30 minutes out from Cancun and you can’t really leave Cancun without seeing it. Visit the museum for more water-based fun and to perfect your diving skills. The museum is on the sea floor, around three to six metres down, and there are more than 450 sculptures submerged there. Dive down and find some of its treasures.
Whether it’s your first time visiting Mexico or you’re a seasoned Cancun traveller, there’s always more to discover. Choose one of our Platinum Cancun hotels and you’ll have the best home base you could ask for. From there, the choice is yours! From diving trips to cenote dips, the world – or, Cancun at least – is your oyster, so why not book your Cancun holidays and get out there?
