Make an appointment with your local beauty salon

Book in for a lash and brow tint before your next sun holiday (make sure to have a patch test first) and you can avoid having to wear any eye make up during the day. Once your lashes and brows are darkened you’re good to go, the lash dye can even give the illusion of wearing eyeliner.

If you simply can’t be without mascara, try Bourjois Volume Reveal Mascara (Waterproof), €12.95, not just for splashing about in the pool, but the long stay formula won’t smudge in the heat. Just make sure you have a waterproof cleanser too like the Rimmel Eye Make Up Remover.

    Prep your skin

No amount of make up will compensate for dry, damaged or dehydrated skin. Drink lots of water on the flight, try to avoid wearing make up and keep lips hydrated with Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm €3.95.

    Choose multi purpose products

We all struggle with baggage allowance going on holidays and the weight of your make up can really start to add up. Find products with more than one use, such as a highlight, blush and contour palette like Rimmel Kate Sculpting Palette, €9.99, that can also be used on the eyes. Or a lip and cheek tint such as Benefit Cha Cha Tint, €12 for the mini size.

    Decant products

You’ll never use more than a sample size amount of foundation on holidays, so either pour your favourite into a reusable plastic pot or visit the make up counters and ask for a foundation sample. MAC Face & Body is great in the heat as it’s water-based (and also water-resistant, from €32), so it won’t feel too heavy on your skin. Or try a BB cream for another lightweight option such as Rimmel BB Cream, SPF25, €8.99 with built in primer and mattifier.

Beware of SPF in skincare and make up

At home, a factor 30 in your moisturiser and foundation might be enough to protect your skin, but on a sun holiday those numbers can be misleading, so don’t rely on it as your sole source of sun protection factor. Reapplication is key when it comes to SPF, so bear this in mind when wearing make up on holidays. Garnier Moisture Bomb Hydrating Mist has SPF30 and can be applied under and over make up for top ups throughout the day.

    Pick liquids and creams

Powder can sit on your skin in the heat, so choose cream and liquid formulations instead. An added bonus is they’re easier to apply and blend with your fingers, so you won’t need to pack as many make up brushes. Try Stila Convertible Colour for lips & cheeks in Gerbera a perfect peach blush shade and Urban Decay Naked Skin Highlighting Fluid in Aura across brow and cheek bones for a lovely glow.
