Benefiting from a staggering 650 miles of pristine coastline and a rich, fascinating history. Crete remains one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Being the largest Greek Island, it has plenty to offer no matter what type of getaway you’re hoping to enjoy.

If you really want to make your Crete holiday unforgettable, it’s worth checking out some of the more unique attractions and activities on offer. To give you a little inspiration, here you’ll discover just some of the most amazing things to do in Crete.

    Heraklion Archaeological Museum

If you’re heading to the Heraklion region, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one attraction you won’t want to miss. Considered one of the best museums in the whole of Greece, it contains the most complete collection of Minoan civilisation artifacts in the world.

Conveniently situated in the town centre, the museum was built between 1935 and 1958. Throughout the year, the museum also hosts numerous cultural events. So, if you’re checking out Heraklion holidays, why not look to see whether the museum is holding any special events at the time of your visit?

Take a trip to Spinalonga Island

Reachable by boat, the rocky Spinalonga Island is located just off the coast from Crete. Steeped in Venetian history, the island was fortified and used for a variety of purposes over the years. These days, it boasts a tranquil ambiance and provides some of the best views over the stunning crystal blue waters.

It only takes around an hour to explore the tiny island, but it’s fascinating history will certainly tempt you to hang around for longer. If you do visit, it’s worth heading left down from the old town on the island, where you’ll reach the stunning seafront.

Enjoy the unique sights of Rethymno

There’s no doubt most people choose Rethymno holidays for its incredible beaches. The area boasts some of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the entire island. However, did you know there’s so much more to this stunning location than its varied beach scene? If you want to take a little break from soaking up the sun, you’ll want to head to Rethymno old town.

With its narrow streets, fancy shops and friendly locals, a trip to the old town is sure to be unforgettable. Grab a coffee in one of the quaint cafes and take a look around the old fort. There’s so much to see and do here, perfect for those who love to take in the culture of a destination.

Witness the breath-taking Fortress of Koules

Another attraction not be missed if you’re heading to the Heraklion region is the magnificent Fortress of Koules. Although it isn’t open to the public, you can still see the fortress in all its glory as you wander around Heraklion.

The fortress was built in the 16th century by the Venetians and it remains in pretty great condition. While you are in the area, you could also check out the beautiful St. Minas cathedral which is truly spectacular and well worth the visit.

    Explore the beautiful Psychro Cave

If you’re heading to the cosmopolitan Lassithi region, the Psychro Cave, or Diktaean cave, is one of the most amazing attractions in the area. This ancient Minoan cave is said to be the birthplace of the legendary Zeus, and it’s situated just a ten-minute walk from Psychro.

The best part of the cave is definitely the mantle of Zeus, a spectacular stalactite. Although it has unfortunately been damaged by tourists, it still remains a very beautiful sight you won’t want to miss. This really is one of the most breathtaking caves in Crete so don’t forget your camera if you do go!

Find peace at the Sacred Monastery of Arkadi

To the southeast of Rethymnon, you’ll find the majestic Arkadi Monastery. The Eastern Orthodox monastery attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors from across the globe. There are various legends surrounded the monastery and it benefits from a rich and fascinating history.

Even if you aren’t religious, a visit to this outstanding building will leave you with a sense of peace and tranquility.
