Where’s Hot in December?
Longing to enjoy a little winter sun this year? Then why not pack your bags and head off on a winter sun getaway!
There are plenty of destinations that benefit from a warm, sunny climate in winter. If you’re unsure where to head to for the best winter sun holiday, below you’ll discover the hottest locations you can fly to in December.
If you look up average winter temperatures in the Canary Islands, you’ll find Tenerife typically comes out on top. Average highs reach 22.8°C in December here, with approximately six hours of sunshine to bask in.
Renowned for its spectacular beaches, Tenerife is a great place to head to if you’re looking for a winter beach getaway. If you’re travelling with the family, you can head to Playa de las Americas, situated on the island’s west coast.
Base your stay at the popular Villa Mandi and Siam Park. When you stay here, you’ll get free entry to one of Tenerife’s most popular water parks, Siam Park. From the hotel, you can see the manicured grounds of the neighbouring golf course. It has a fantastic pool scene and it’s just 2km to the Vistasur beach.
Alternatively, if you’re travelling with your partner, you may prefer a stay at the luxury Marylanza Suites & Spa Resort. There are two pools and a great gourmet dining scene, and you’ll be just 1.5km from restaurants, bars, shops and the beautiful beach.
With over 120 miles of coastline and stunning landscapes, Gran Canaria is one of the most popular winter holiday destinations. In December, temperatures average around 22.2°C.
The San Agustin region is a particularly great choice to base your winter sun getaway. This is a quieter part of Gran Canaria, but it’s just a short distance from the livelier destination of Playa del Ingles. Tucked away on the south coast, you’ll have access to a beautiful sandy beach that benefits from calm waters. This makes it a great choice for snorkelling.
We offer a few great hotels and resorts in this popular area. For a luxurious getaway, book a stay at the Gloria Palace San Agustin Thalasso and Hotel. This resort caters to everyone, offering family-friendly fun, alongside adult-only areas. Relax on the adults-only chill-out terrace, or cool off in the three outdoor pools. The resort also provides great evening entertainment, and you’ll be just a 10-minute drive from the livelier area of Maspalomas.
Another option is the laidback Costa Canaria Hotel. This is an adult-only hotel, situated right on the beach. Take in spectacular views from the rooftop terrace as you relax in the whirlpool. If you fancy exploring the area, you can walk from the hotel all the way to Playa del Ingles in around an hour.
If you really want to get away from it all this winter, Lanzarote is a great destination to consider. With its famous volcanic landscapes, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a different world. From its world-class beaches to its spectacular scenery, you’ll find a winter holiday to this popular Canary Island has everything you need to escape those winter blues.
Temperatures average highs of 21°C and lows of 14°C, so even on its coolest days it’s still much hotter than Ireland at this time of year. You’ll also avoid the crowds if you head here in December.
Why not treat yourself to a more luxurious winter holiday by heading to the Puerto Calero region? Its beautiful marina is the main attraction here, alongside its local museum, which teaches you about the dolphins, porpoises and whales in the area. Choose to base your stay at the luxury Secrets Lanzarote Resort & Spa. The resort has its own stretch of volcanic sands, and a great spa where you can truly relax and unwind. It caters exclusively to adults and is situated just 12km from the Timanfaya National Park.
