Holidays to Piano di Sorrento are typically Italian, defined by the purr of Vespas and coffee breaks on the piazza. Daytrips to nearby Capri and Pompeii are on the cards, too.
The Sorrentine Peninsula
Pin down a map of Italy, and you’ll spot two peninsulas on the southwest coast, in-line with the country’s ‘spur’ on the other side. The Sorrentine Peninsula's the southernmost of the two, and Piano di Sorrento is right in the middle of it.
An Italian archetype
It may be just 15 minutes’ drive away, but Piano di Sorrento couldn’t be further from lively Sorrento town in terms of atmosphere. Piano’s the type of place you’d shoot a coffee advert in, where Vespas are the vehicle of choice, and tree-lined piazzas provide the setting for espresso-fuelled catch-ups.
The beach set-up in Piano di Sorrento's a bit different to most. Consider its setting, for a start, in the neighbouring coastal hamlet of Marina di Cassano. The shoreline, and the pastel-painted village next to it, nests under imposing, 100-metre-high cliffs. Then, there are its volcanic origins, which give the sand its slate-grey colour.
Base yourself in Piano di Sorrento, and you’ll have easy access to the rest of the Campania region. The bustling centre of Sorrento's a 15-minute cab ride away, and you can drive to lofty Mount Vesuvius in less than an hour. Hop on a boat at the harbour, and you can go celeb spotting on the island of Capri – it’s just 30 minutes away.
