On the Outskirts of Alvor up a Hill. Poor food.
The location was not ideal for us. It was on the outskirts of Alvor up a hill. This meant every time you returned from going out whether it be the beach or the town you had a steady climb. You could catch the number 14 bus (P1 at weekends) at the bottom on the slope near the hotel, otherwise it was the expensive of a taxi. The Pestana Delfim comes nowhere near to its 4 star rating. The hotel itself 3 star but the food bearly warranted 2 stars. Lack of choice was one issue, It was constantly reheated and poor quality, with the exception of breakfast which was actually quite nice. Also the afternoon tea was one of the few highlights. it was no coincidence that there a number of guests were ill with stomach upsets including us for 24 hours. Our room was good but rather rather dated. The beds we comfortable an the shower was excellent. A fridge is included but you had to mpay a supplement for the safe The television set was cumbersome and old, not the slim type that is common nowadays. No british TV channels. The entertaiment was awful. We found the staff, especially those on reception to be very pleasant and helpful .A lot of the sunbeds around the pool did not function properly and there was a shortge of umbrelllas. This might have been a great hotel 20 years ago but it badly needs a lot doing to it now. A complete rethink on the food is essential.More
More like a three star all inclusive, but ideal for golfing groups
If you are a golfer looking for a bed and reasonable food this place will do. The rooms are clean and the staff helpful and polite. The food is plentiful but repetitive. if you fancy a fun night the main bars are only a 10 minute walk down the roadMore

Checked in Saturday 30th September went straight back to reception to inform them air conditioning in bedroom was not working, was told maintenance would fix. Went back Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Monday morning, Monday evening, Tuesday morning, and finally on Tuesday lunchtime was told by a receptionist who didn't seem very happy to see me(he was dismissive of me), that a fan would be put in my room. After 4 days all we got was a fan that did little to improve the situation, we had no other communication from anyone at the hotel. I am a big fan of Pestana Hotel's but this was very disappointing to say the least. I booked and paid extra for a Suite, for extra comfort, but got none as the bedroom was too hot, and the impression I was left with, was that the staff knew the air conditioning didn't work, and wasn't going to be fixed, and it was tough if we didn't like it. Very poor experience, both in terms of the problem we had and the absence of any care from hotel staff to deal with it. I provided this feedback to the Hotel the morning we returned home, a week later I got a reply apologizing for the delay in replying, saying sorry we didn't exceed your expectations, and hope to see you soon.More
Not up to Scratch. The restaurant and food were both very poor.
The Pestana Delfim is on the edge of town located on a hill. It certainly does not come anywhere close to its 4 star rating, It is extremely tired and date and in its present state, 2 stars would be more appropriate. Our biggest gripe was the restaurant. It reminded us of a 1980's works canteen except the meals are not as good. the food to be honest was very poor with little choice. No cold meats or salads as an option for lunch and the evening meal. The quality and hygiene was suspect . It was not surprising that we had significant increased bowels movements as a result. Also the air conditioning was not functioning. It really forced us to eat out in Alvor in the evenings, which was an added unexpected expense. Add on the cost of a taxi to return to avoid negotiating the hill on the return journey and the all inclusive package wit these additions made it expensive. also the entertainment it the hotel would have had all the performers throw out very early on the X Factor. On the plus side our room bigger than expected with great sea views. Also free Wi Fi was free and available every where in the hotel and and the swimming pool. Only local spirits included in the all inclusive and the brandy apart the rest were very weak and tasted nothing like the real thing. Only one member of staff served behind the bar and at peaks quite a queue formed. we thought The Brits were in the minority here and there was a cross section of nationalities stayng here including several French pensioners coach parties.More
Bargain basement all inclusive, but OK if you keep an open mind.
Having read the reviews on here, I came with lowish expectations. Overall I was pleasantly surprised. I think some of the reviewers on here expected Sandals for the price of Butlins.(we were at Sandals two weeks before) OK, it's an 80s concrete edifice, with very garish and dated decor, but there are many positives. The rooms are quite spacious and very clean. The food is good, with plenty of choices at every mealtime. I'm a fussy eater, and was never hungry or disappointed. The drinks were plentiful, with decent beer, wine and sangria on tap. There are, however, some significant negatives. Either there are not enough staff, or they are bone idle. Often the mess left around the pool area and grounds was not cleaned for days. The bars only had one staff member, so a wait was inevitable. The toilets in the public areas are truly disgusting, with broken seats, no soap, and a smell that could stop a charging rhinoceros. There seems to be no supervision around the pool area. After two days of relative peace, we had busloads of Portuguese families turn up. Their feral children ran riot around the pool, riding skateboards and hover boards everywhere (including the restaurants), jumping off the bridge structure, and not a word was said by any staff. The adults , who were clearly rejects from the local equivalent of the Jeremy Kyle show, often took food and glasses out of the restaurants to have an al-fresco pool party; with the debris left around for a whole day afterwards. The pool bar was never manned, and looks like it was last used in the 1980s. It was a blessed relief when the buses departed and we had peace and quiet for the last 2 days. In conclusion, we had a great holiday. The beach is close by, and spectacular. The town is a shortish walk, and nice, if you like the full-english-breakfast-irish-bar-happy hour vibe. However, Sandals it ain't, and it never will be. Remember though, it's 85% cheaper than Sandals.More
