Wild at heart

Tanzania’s main headliner is the Serengeti. But dig a little deeper and you’ll discover this east African gem’s wall-to-wall with big names. Everything about it is fit for a David Attenborough documentary – whether it’s hikes up Mount Kilimanjaro, tracking down the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater, or basking on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar.

Idyllic Zanzibar

The sights don’t stop at the mainland – Tanzania’s shore wears a necklace of islands, too. The most well-known belong to the Zanzibar Archipelago, with the main island going by the same name. Beach-wise, Zanzibar isn’t far off the Maldives. Picture bleached white sands and clear Indian Ocean waters, brimming with turtles, dolphins and whale sharks.

Spice and all things nice

Zanzibar’s appeal doesn’t start and stop with beaches. The isle was once the hub of the ancient trade routes, so it’s got an Africa-meets-Arabia feel to it. Capital Stone Town bears the markings of its mixed heritage, with a former sultan’s palace, underground aqueducts and huge carved doorways at every turn. Plus, you’ll see where Zanzibar got its nickname – the Spice Island – on a wander of the local bazaars.
