Hotel Zeus

Really enjoyed our first visit to this hotel. It was very good and value for money. They were all friendly and always spoke to us when passing. I don't understand clients that were disappointed with the breakfast. We have had better breakfasts yes, but this was a chilled week and our theory was if we didn't eat a large breakfast we could have lunch later. Also how can anyone expect any more for there money. I empathise with this hotel and all in the tourist industry who have lost lots of trade and money through the Thomas Cook collapse, they remained professional about it. Would go back tomorrow if we could, actually we only got back this morning at 4. Thank you everyone at Zeus.

On arriving at ~11pm we were at the front of the queue only to be ignored as the people behind us were returning guests, as a lot are, which is rather disconcerting. The first point raised was the tourist tax (~£20 for the week so better than most other countries), we were told the breakfast was 8-10am but not where. The room was good, well laid out & clean, but had no aircon or TV remote & we couldn't work the safe which led to an unpleasant discussion as the aircon was ~£7 per night, TV remote was missing but one was brought, but we had to pay £15 for the DIGITAL safe to be activated ie pressing a button - what a rip off! I would have expected to pay a deposit for a key but what cost do they have for a digital safe. Next morning I tried to log on to the wifi only to find that had to be paid for & when enquiring at reception luckily they didn't have any cards available, in the end we used the wifi at the restaurants which is provided at no extra cost. Just to add insult to injury the router is on the reception desk, the age of the clientele probably means that not a lot of people ask but these days is it a big no-no. As stated the rooms are excellent and are cleaned daily, the cleaner is helpful & friendly, the shower is powerful & the balcony is a good size to sit out on. The majority of the guests are (well) above retirement age & seem to returning year after year so you would expect a degree of understanding when leaving the bar at night, this most definitely isn't the case so make sure your room is well away from the bar. The pool area is clean, there were plenty of spare sunbeds although this was probably due to the fact the hotel wasn't full & a good point is the mattress on top of the loungers making them very comfortable. Room can be kept on for late flights, we paid £25 to keep it till 8pm which is a bit pricey but they were very good as I wanted to pay on a card so could book the room & pay at a later time. I've saved the worst till last - the breakfasts - they are absolutely appalling, we paid for B&B but all that was served up was instant cheap coffee/ tea, a choice of 2no. cheap cereals, a plate of sliced cucumber & tomatoes, dry bread & jam, toast could be done but there was only 1no. double toaster so either stand & wait or be very quick. There was the option to buy English/ eggs on toast etc but it is taking the p**s to provide something which is that bad then to offer a decent one but at an extra cost. To provide yoghurts/ pain au chocolat/ croissants/ meats/ cheeses etc would not cost a lot but would make a huge difference. My partner and I were really looking forward to going on holiday as we had both worked hard all year and needed a quiet break. On arrival we were greeted by a miserable man at reception, who didn’t introduce himself but at the end of the holiday we discovered was the Manager. A very friendly man at the bar called Nicos welcomed us which made up for it, but the contrast between the two were polar opposites. The manager presented us with the key, number of room and the only words he said was breakfast is between 8 and 10. I said to my partner whilst climbing the stairs, the information must all be in the room. We crept down the corridor and quietly opened and shut the door as we were fully aware it was the early hours of the morning and didn’t want to awaken any guests. ( we discovered unfortunately that other guests didn’t have the same courtesy throughout our holiday, even though there were signs, not the fault of the hotel. We discovered that nearly all the guests were at retirement age and maybe don’t need as much sleep as others and therefore did not repay the same courtesy, shame as we needed the sleep, hence the holiday) The hotel and the room were very clean and we were very pleased, however there was no information available as we hunted through all the draws and cupboards. The next day I looked for information on the walls and desk of reception but nothing. We asked about the safe and got told it was 17 euros so we figured out for ourselves that WiFi, air con, turning the fridge on would be a cost to ( something that we had not catered for in our budget) We were unsure if they done meals as there were no menus, we did ask at lunchtime and was presented with one, we weren’t told evening meals weren’t available but figured that out for ourselves as no one was eating. Breakfast was basic but they had a menu to tempt you to pay for something better I think that was the idea. You can’t take your own bottled drinks to the sun lounges but have to buy everything from there, this they did make clear with signs. The most upsetting part about the holiday was when we checked out. The manager was very loud, aggressive and defensive when he told us we owed them 25 Euros for not checking out at midday. My partner tried to explain we had no idea about this no one had told us and there was no information to state this. But he started to get more loud and defensive not allowing my partner to talk and accused him of getting angry, where it was clearly a reflection of him. He told us that we should have asked what time checking out was, but I’ve never heard this before in my life. My partner said we arrived late so beings we weren’t told anything we assumed we were checking out late. ( wondering if this is another way of making money) I found him very intimidating and I wouldn’t want to be a woman on my own that’s for sure! My partner paid the money but just wanted him to be aware of the fact that we didn’t know and for future they should let guests be aware like all the extra charges, but he wasn’t listening. This was upsetting for me to the end of our holiday, he was so rude and nasty it has put me off ever stepping on the island again. I just want others to be aware of this so their holiday is not ruined in such an aggressive manner. Will never be returning again, they have the same people go back year after year who obviously get treated a lot differently!!!
