Holidays to Germany combine fairytale castles with lively cities, dense forests, and a beer festival so famous it's known the world over. And with a culture based on colourful costumes and centuries-old folk music, there's always lots going on.
You’ll find a blend of architectural styles in Bavaria. The famous fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein is designed in the Romanesque Revival style, while Munich’s Marienplatz Square is surrounded by gothic structures. However, the standout architectural style is the iconic Bavarian chalet. You can see the chalets on the 350-kilometre Romantic Road. The three-hour drive takes you through Bavaria’s most quintessentially German towns.
For outdoors enthusiasts, there are lots of activities and sporting opportunities available in Germany’s Black Forest. Titisee Lake and Schluchsee Lake offer watersports such as diving and windsurfing. And for hikers, there are 23,000 kilometres of maintained trails through the forest area. The long-distance E1 path travels through the Black Forest between Baden and Wuerttemberg. And at the end of a busy day, there’s Black Forest ham and cake to enjoy.
Munich is Bavaria’s capital, and it's one of the largest cities in Germany. With palaces, parks, and old royal residences, Munich is a picturesque place to visit. You can learn a lot about Bavarian history and culture here. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum, or the Bavarian National Museum. And if you’re looking for a great night out, Munich is also home to the Bavarian State Opera and Bavarian State Ballet.
