Mountains, lakes, and cities

Switzerland is a diverse country where you can hike the mountainous alpine landscape one day, shop 'til you drop the next, and finish it all off with some much-needed lakeside relaxation. Wengen and Zermatt are popular resorts known for their winter snow and classic wooden chalets. Montreux offers souvenir shops and museums. For lakes, it has to be Interlaken, which sits snugly between Brienzersee to the east, and Thunersee to the west.

Switzerland attracts people from all over the world who come to sample the local foods. The cuisine is influenced by Switzerland's neighbours – Germany, France, Austria, and Italy. Cheese fondue and creamy chocolate are some of the most famous offerings. But don't miss out on warming rosti potato cakes, Biberli gingerbread, and the wafer-like biscuit known as hubben.

Getting around

If you're looking for a car-free getaway, you'll be pleased to hear that Switzerland's railway network is vast and expansive. Not only can you travel by train up Mount Pilatus' 48% gradient on the cogwheel railway, but you can also travel between Zermatt and St Moritz using the dedicated Glacier Express. Or hop between Interlaken and Lucerne in under two hours.
