Holidays to Switzerland are all about the vast mountains, tranquil lakes and cities that bubble with heritage - all linked by a transport system that you could set your watch to.
A great track record
Switzerland is a land of railways. You can be gliding through Alpine forests on the Glacier Express one day and clacking up Mount Pilatus on the world’s steepest cogwheel the next. Each is beautifully engineered and surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.
So much to see
Switzerland’s a country of mixed cultures, food and traditions, from its medieval town centres right up to the mountaintop huts, serving fondue and crisp rösti with glorious views. Cosmopolitan Grindelwald and traffic-free Wengen and Zermatt are pretty mountain resorts, complete with Alpine architecture and the Jungfrau railway, which will take you to Europe’s highest station at Jungfraujoch. The railway starts in Interlaken, a beautiful town sandwiched between two lakes. Also on the water are historical Lucerne, with its castles and medieval bridge, and the cosmopolitan town of Montreux, set beside the paddle steamers and castles of Lake Geneva.
Treats with a view
Wherever you choose to stay, there are crystal lakes to paddle in and beautiful views to look out on. And you’re never far from a cable car that’ll whisk you up to the peaks, where you can take a scenic walk or just stop for a coffee and carac, the local ganache-filled pastry.
