The United Arab Emirates is made up of seven states, each with a unique story to tell. Futuristic cities are the norm here. And they’re interlaced with the likes of bustling souks, authentic Arabian cafes and some of the world’s biggest mosques. Then, there’s the beach scene – where mile after mile of silky sand’s lapped by the glittering Persian Gulf.

Standout cities

Dubai takes the award for the United Arab Emirates’ most popular holiday spot, and that’s largely thanks to its ultra-modern vibe – think manmade islands, flashy malls and the world’s tallest building. And, in nearby Abu Dhabi, you’ve got theme park-studded islands and an art museum that’s been dubbed one of the modern urban wonders of the world.

Back to nature

Step outside the UAE’s cities, and you’ll uncover a whole host of activities that make the most of the country’s unique natural landscape. You can whizz over rippling dunes on a desert safari in Ras Al Khaimah, or cruise around the Persian Gulf on a traditional dhow boat. Abu Dhabi’s mangrove channels are popular with kayakers. And, over in lesser-known Fujairah, you can often spot dolphins and pufferfish in the wild on a snorkelling trip.
