Capital
Prague
Holidays to the Czech Republic offer up a winning combination of culture and countryside.
The Czech Republic’s capital, Prague, has been nicknamed the City of a Hundred Spires, so it goes without saying that the skyline’s pretty special. The architecture on display spans from medieval to Renaissance in style. Three cathedrals and a sprawling castle are some of the stand-out features, and the river’s crossed by more than a dozen historic bridges.
Lovers of the great outdoors won’t be able to get enough of the Czech Republic’s unspoilt countryside. In fact, the country’s home to some of Europe’s best-looking forests, lakes and mountains. The Bohemian Forest is a must-see – it’s laced with more than 500 kilometres of hiking trails, from which you can spot the likes of deer, lynx and otters.
Like a few of its neighbours, the Czech Republic’s cuisine is dominated by hearty dishes – think meat, potatoes and veg. What the country’s really known for, though, is its beer. In fact, the average Czech drinks more than 190 litres of the stuff every year – more than any other country in the world. Pilsner is the most popular choice of tipple, and you’ll have no trouble finding some to wash down all of those meaty meals with.
