Holidays to Poland dish out everything from old castles and Gothic churches to lofty mountains and sapphire-tinted lakes.
Poland boasts no less than 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, so it goes without saying that the country’s got a remarkable history. Krakow’s old town centre and the Wieliczka Salt Mines are two of the best-known, and history buffs also flock to the medieval town of Torun and the sombre WWII memorial at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Krakow’s known for its magnificent architecture – the contrasting Gothic spires of St Mary’s Basilica and the mix-and-match features of the Renaissance Royal Palace draw in plenty of crowds. Go underground, however, and there’s a whole lot more to uncover. A network of tunnels called The Rynek Underground Museum gives you a dose of the city’s history, and subterranean cellar bars host everything from jazz nights to techno parties.
The Tatra Mountains in southern Poland put the country on the map for different reasons – skiers glide down Kasprowy Wierch, while hikers make tracks up Glewont’s three peaks. The town of Zakopane sits at the feet of these mountains. Here, you’ll find emerald-green lakes, traditional markets and restaurants serving up steaming bowls of kwasnica cabbage soup.
