Iceland’s nicknamed the land of fire and ice, and it’s not hard to see why. From volcanoes and hot springs to waterfalls, glaciers and geysers, there are natural wonders everywhere you look. In fact, the island’s spot just beneath the Arctic Circle makes it one of the most geologically active countries on the planet. The Blue Lagoon – a huge geothermal pool near Reykjavik – is not to be missed. Its toasty waters are ideal for soaking in after a long day’s sightseeing.

A colourful capital

Most visitors to Iceland land in the country’s capital, Reykjavik. It’s the most northerly capital in the world and is packed with Nordic charm – think rainbow-hued houses and a striking church. The city’s well known for its world-class nightlife, so you can expect plenty of buzzy bars and clubs. Plus, loads of independent restaurants are on hand to serve warm, hearty dinners.

The Golden Circle

If you’re only in Iceland for a short time, make the Golden Circle your must-do. This circular sightseeing route takes you to three of the island’s most famous natural wonders – the Geysir geothermal area, Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss Waterfall. The route’s around 155 miles long, and starts and ends in the capital, so it can be easily done in a day.

Spectacular skies

Sightseeing in Iceland is different depending on the season. In winter, people flock here for the chance to catch a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights. If you don’t fancy braving the snow and ice in your hire car, you can take a Northern Lights tour from Reykjavik. In summer, however, it’s the midnight sun that draws in the crowds. With so many hours of daylight, you’ll be able to squeeze in even more of the country’s sights.
