Perched on the western shores of the Black Sea, holidays to Bulgaria show off the beauty of the Balkans. Blue Flag beaches and historic cities await you here, and it's easy to jet off with direct flights from Dublin.
Sunny Beach is a thriving resort that boasts 18 kilometres of soft sands. Not only does the resort itself offer markets, beach bars, and swimming opportunities, but there’s also easy access to two local waterparks. This makes it a top choice for families. Less than a two-hour drive away is the Golden Sands resort, with a Blue Flag beach nestled beneath the rocky cliffs.
The ancient city of Nessebar is a UNESCO-listed destination that juts into the Black Sea. There are lots of historically important sites here, including the ancient theatre and the Nessebar Tower. Many of the old churches have been turned into museums where you can learn more about local history. And if you’re visiting with children, there’s a large park right on the coast.
Bulgaria is more than just its coast. A four-hour drive inland brings you to the heart of the Balkan mountains, which are dominated by the highest peak of Botev. If the 2,376-metre summit doesn’t appeal, there are plenty of easier hikes in the Balkans. The White River Eco Trail from the town of Kalofer is a one-hour walk which takes you along the banks of the Byala River.
