Holidays to Salou give you Blue Flag beaches, 24-hour nightlife and white-knuckle rides in Europe's biggest theme park. It's just 90 minutes on the train to Barcelona, and for walkers there's a coastal path.
You can fly direct to the Costa Dorada in Spain from Dublin, Cork or Shannon. Salou lies just south of Barcelona, and is 20 minutes' drive from the huge PortAventura theme park. There are several waterparks in the area and a go-kart track with a stomach-dropping bungee rocket ride. You can zip-line and practise archery in the town park, and go hiking, biking and horse-riding.
You’ve got two main beaches to choose from at Salou. West of the port, you'll find Ponent beach, one kilometre of Blue Flag sand, with several cafés and a small fairground. Llevant beach is on the eastern side and a bit longer. You can play volleyball here, visit a gym and take the children to the playground. Both beaches offer plenty of watersports.
You can reach Tarragona with a 10-minute drive, where you can visit a medieval citadel, a 12th-century cathedral and an amphitheatre. For Gaudi fans, you can admire his terrific art deco architecture in Barcelona, which you can get to in just 90 minutes on the train. There's also a chic marina here, and the varied attractions of Las Ramblas boulevard.
