Miscellaneous

Can I bring a loved one’s ashes onboard a Marella cruise ship to be scattered?

Ashes can be scattered in international waters – that’s 12 miles out to sea from any port – and we’re happy to help in any way we can. Please contact us with your booking details before you travel to make the arrangements. You’ll need to let the airline you’re travelling with know, too.

Once you arrive onboard, you’ll be invited to meet with the Guest Experience Coordinator who’ll help you make arrangements for the scattering. There’s some useful information below which we’d recommend you read through before coming onboard.

Any scattering of ashes onboard our ships is done in accordance with international regulations that must be adhered to, including MARPOL (The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships).

  • The place, date and time of the commemoration service will be based on environmental restrictions. It must be performed at least 12 nautical miles from land, and outside of any marine protected areas.
  • You must bring a copy of the deceased’s death certificate.
  • The ashes must be carried in a leak proof, sealed container while you’re travelling.
  • The container must be able to pass through the X-ray machines at the airport and on the ship.
  • The ashes are your responsibility, and Marella Cruises will not be responsible for any oversight or incident.
  • Cremated remains must stay onboard until the commemoration service and cannot be taken ashore once onboard.
  • If you would like to throw anything else overboard other than the ashes, it must biodegradable. This includes the use of a decomposable container, any wreaths or flowers. All non-biodegradable decorations or adornments, including ribbon, plastic flowers and balloons, are prohibited.
