View All DealsHolidays to Vilamoura are ideal for family fun and for sports fans, and come with a dash of history thrown in. Romans enjoyed this resort, which has now been thoroughly revitalised to make the most of its considerable assets. Golf is a speciality, with fine Algarve cuisine and two very good sandy beaches. Plus, you can fly there direct from Dublin or Cork.
Vilamoura life revolves around its golf courses, its casino and its huge marina. This is crammed with high-end yachts and lots of really good authentic Portuguese restaurants. You'll want to visit the marina for a sunset drink in its elegant bars, and to sample the local food. There are many modern hotels and beach clubs and some of the Algarve's best beaches.
There's a good museum here with some substantial Roman ruins that will give you an idea of the ancient village lifestyle. The bathhouses and mosaics in the villa indicate that Vilamoura has been the choice of upmarket tourists for many centuries. Its other historic inhabitants include Visigoths and Moors.
The Algarve is a famous golfing hotspot, and Vilamoura offers a choice of world-class courses. If you're up for a few rounds, you can find golfing agencies in the marina complex who'll organise it for you. This includes transport to the course, green fees and club hire. If you want to make golf the centrepiece of your holiday, you can also get a custom-designed experience via the course organisers. Other sports include tennis, riding, mountain biking, shooting and bowls.
