Holidays to Hinterglemm are all about getting out in the fresh mountain air and getting back to nature.

Charming alpine town

If you were to think of an authentic Austrian town, it wouldn’t be far off Hinterglemm. This traditional village is dotted with mountain huts, with a river running through the centre and a backdrop of flower-filled meadows. In the summer months, there are plenty of festivals and events going on, as well as a market one evening every week. And the busier Saalbach is only a quick bus ride down the road, so exploring the area is easy peasy.

A walker’s paradise

Hinterglemm is heaven for hikers, with over 400km of walking trails and cycle routes at your feet. Stroll through flower-filled meadows, make your way deeper into an alpine forest, or challenge yourself with a mountain hike. Make sure you give the Baumzipfelweg a go too – it’s Europe’s largest treetop trail, and it leads you to the ‘Golden gate bridge’ of the Alps, so the wow-worthy views are guaranteed.

Playgrounds and pools

There are heaps of things to do with the little ones too. Head down the road to Saalbach’s Käpt’n Hook adventure pool and kids will have a blast with the pirate ship swimming pool, climbing nets and slides – plus, you'll get free entry with a Joker Card (included with your stay at selected accommodations). There’s also a playground at the top of the Schattberg X-press gondola, or follow the Wildlife trail and see if you can spot any foxes, golden eagles or deer. And for a fantasy feel, take a trip to the Devil’s Water nature park where you can find a fairy and gnome world, magical cave walks and ponds you can paddle in to cool off.

Beaches

Make a splash

When the sun's out, nothing's better than a refreshing dip. Walk to Lake Hochtor or Hackelberger up the mountain and take a plunge, or for a day trip, jump on the 680 bus to Zell am See where you can lay back on a sandy beach and swim in the warmer water.

Between Hinterglemm and Saalbach there're loads of places to grab a bite, from casual mountain huts to fancier à la carte restaurants.

Sun terrace schnitzels at Sonnalm

Perched above Hinterglemm with sweeping mountain views, this stylish alpine hut blends traditional Austrian comfort food with a modern touch. Expect perfectly crisp Wiener schnitzel, hearty ribs, fluffy Kaiserschmarrn and regional specialties, served in a cosy wood-and-stone setting with a sunny terrace that’s ideal after a hike or bike ride. You can reach it after a 20-minute walk from the top of the Reiterkogelbahn lift. Open from Friday to Sunday.

Asian cuisine at Café Oriental

The restaurant in Hotel Alpen-Karawanserai breaks away from the traditional Austrian theme with a menu inspired by the Middle East.

Proper Austrian at Furhmannstube

Hotel Glücksschmiede's restaurant is the perfect place for a casual meal, with classic comfort food that'll satisfy anyone's appetite.

Getting about

Buses

The daily 680 bus service runs to Saalbach, Zell am See and Lengau. The buses are free for you to use with your Joker Card.

Summer lifts

There are six lifts open in the summer – the Reiterkogel and Zwolferkogel are in Hinterglemm's centre, and the others are in Saalbach. The Reiterkogel is the only lift open from the end of May, with the second lift opening at the beginning of June, and the remaining two at the end of June, until the end of September or October. You can use the lifts for free with your Joker Card (included with your stay at selected accommodations).

Trains

There’s a scenic tourist train, the ‘Talschlusszug’ (valley head train), which runs from Lengau – a small hamlet at the end of Hinterglemm – through the valley to the Lindlingalm. It’s a great way to access walking routes and alpine huts, and is free with a Joker Card. The nearest mainline train station is Maishofen-Saalbach (around 25 minutes by bus), with regular rail connections to Salzburg (approx. 1 hour 30 minutes) and Innsbruck (around 2 hours 15 minutes).

On foot

Hinterglemm's pedestrianised centre is nice and flat, so you can easily get around at your own pace. For a steeper walk to get a sweat on, jump on one of the gondolas up into the mountains for some more challenging trails.

Hinterglemm's got a huge network of walking trails, with over 400km waiting for you to explore. Routes range from easy to challenging and vary in length, from under 1km to over 40km. There are also themed paths, like the Wildlife, Wellness and Herbal trails, which have things to see and do along the way.
