Holidays to Valletta take you to a 16th-century Baroque city that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. Malta's capital city is a former European Capital of Culture. Valletta combines rich French and British history with modern shopping opportunities. There's also a unique gastronomic scene here.
Valletta was given UNESCO World Heritage status in 1980. It also holds the record for being one of UNESCO’s most densely populated historic areas. There are 320 listed monuments in just 55 hectares. Valletta has a uniform city layout. You’ll notice that the streets are laid out in a grid pattern, a little like New York City, so it’s very easy to find your way around.
Don’t want to hire a car? No problem. The best way to see Valletta is on foot. In less than one hour you could do an entire lap of the city. Starting at the Upper Barrakka Gardens, you could visit the City Gate, Ponsonby’s Column, Jews’ Sally Port, St Elmo Bay, Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum, and the War Siege Memorial. Of course, you’ll want to allow longer to stop and visit these top attractions.
Valletta’s coastal location means that boat trips are among some of the biggest attractions in the city. You can take a 15-minute ferry ride over to Sliema for a day-trip. Here, you can visit Fort Tigne and check out the huge shopping centres. Even if you’re not planning to take a ferry, be sure to stop by the departure point. The nearby rocks are a favourite sunbathing spot for locals in the hot summer months.
The nearest sandy beaches are 60 minutes' drive away.
