City breaks to Stockholm match historic streets and candy-hued houses with quirky museums and quiet islands.
Sweden’s capital’s one of the prettiest city break spots in Europe. Its colourful buildings and historic sites are dotted across 14 islands, each one connected to its neighbours by one or more of around 50 bridges. And if you thought that was a lot, there are about 30,000 other islands located off Stockholm’s coast in the Baltic Sea.
Stockholm’s old town – Gamla Stan – is spread across four islands. It’s one of the biggest Medieval centres in Europe, with winding alleyways and cobblestone streets housing buildings dating all the way back to the 13th century. The Royal Palace is one of the must-sees – with more than 600 rooms, it’s one of the largest royal residences on the continent.
If history and culture are your thing, you’re in luck – Stockholm’s got plenty of museums worth checking out. The ABBA Museum is a must-visit for fans of the iconic Swedish band. Then there’s the Vasa Museum, which houses a warship with a fascinating past. And if it’s modern masterpieces you’re after, make a beeline for Moderna Museet – the city’s museum for contemporary art.
The 30,000 islands in Stockholm’s archipelago are surprisingly easy to explore – the furthest is just a two-hour boat ride away. You can book a private tour, or hop on a ferry. And an offshore island-hopping trip is an ideal way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a day. Secluded sandy coves, rocky cliffs and tiny fishing hamlets are dotted all over.
