Holidays to Wengen in Switzerland's rocky Lauterbrunnen Valley are centred around a traditional Swiss Alpine village. It's set in an area of natural scenic beauty with waterfalls, glacial lakes, and views of the Bernese Alps.
Wengen has a peaceful feel to it, sheltered under the great bulk of the Jungfrau mountain. Although it's busy with competition skiers in the winter, summer is a time to relax and take in the countryside environment. Traditional street festivals will give you a taste of local culture, and there are several summer concerts. You'll spend most of your time checking out the sights, though. The village itself offers pleasant walks around the chalet-style buildings, or you can reach some 500 kilometres of mountain trails from the top of the cable car.
The reliable Swiss rail network makes it a pleasure to venture out across the whole region. The transport network of cable cars and mountain railways gives the area-wide coverage. It's fun just to ride the cars, but the views of the tiny towns surrounded by the snow-capped mountains are what make this network special. The most famous transport option here is the Jungfrau Railway, going all the way from Interlaken to a mountain peak known as the Top of Europe. This UNESCO-protected area is called the Jungfraujoch, and the Sphinx Observatory at the summit offers the best observation point, where you can see the Grosser Aletsch glacier.
There's no rep based in Switzerland, but you can call our 24/7 TUI Service Centre at any time if you need help.
Here are a few of Wengen's top attractions:
• Cycle routes
• Walking trails
• Mountain railways
• Open-air concerts
• Paragliding
• Tennis courts
• Outdoor pool
• Minigolf
Wengen is quite a small resort, making it ideal for those who prefer low-key evenings and early nights. Hotel bars are great for a few drinks after your dinner. A casual stroll around the village while the sun is setting is also a perfect way to end the day.
There's only a handful of vibrant venues in Wengen, including the Rocks Bar and Tanne Bar - lively cocktail and gin bars.
Wengen's a relatively small resort, but it has a decent offering of restaurants serving traditional Swiss, Italian and French cuisines. Most are based within the hotels, but you'll find some great restaurants and cafés on the Dorfstrasse or Greubi too. And of course there’s no shortage of fondue.
On the Greubi is Da Sina, an Italian restaurant with an authentic atmosphere – from the décor to the service. The pizza here is renowned, and it's home to a range of good local beers. There’s also a lovely view of the Jungfrau from the outdoor patio.
Opposite the railway station is the Restaurant Silberhorn-Stube, famous for its hospitality and food recommendations from its staff. They create dishes inspired by Swiss cuisine and have a huge wine selection, as well as an outdoor terrace that's great for people watching.
On the other side of town is the Hotel Restaurant Bären, a comfortable, spacious eatery where each plate is decorated with a bear’s paw print. Every dish is made with local produce and ticks all the boxes when it comes to presentation.
The village of Wengen is a pretty small resort so it won’t take long to walk from one end to the other, but, as it’s up on the mountain, you’ll have fantastic views wherever you are.
If you make your way down to Interlaken, you can jump on ferries on both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Services depart once an hour in high season and stop at various towns and villages around the lakes. Ferries in Lake Thun don't start operating until 11am.
Hop on the Wengernalpbahn down to Lauterbrunnen. From here you can catch rail connections to Interlaken in 20 minutes as well as various other places in the Jungfrau region. And take advantage of your Swiss Half Fare Card that you get as part of your holiday for up to 50% off Swiss train journeys during your stay.
There aren't any public buses in Wengen, but most hotels do run electric shuttle transfers to and from the station on arrival and departure days, at set times.
From Wengen, you can catch the Männlichen cable car and Jungfrau railway up the mountains for breathtaking views and fresh air. For other routes, take the Wengernalp railway down to Lauterbrunnen, where you can catch other mountain railways and cable cars.
Over 500km of marked trails await you in the Jungfrau region, a walker’s paradise with Alpine meadows, glacial gorges, crystal-clear lakes and dramatic mountains. The Panorama walk to Kleine Scheidegg is amazing – the sheer size of the Lauterbrunnen Valley is sure to impress. The summer lifts and trains give you access to more towns and routes, such as the gentle trails from Murren or the lakeside strolls from bustling Interlaken.
A real treat for your taste buds awaits you at the end of this route. Catch the Mannlichen cable car and then the Mannlichen gondola to the mid-station, and follow the well-used path, keeping an eye out for marmots. You’ll wind through meadows, past chocolate box houses and farms, and through woodland along this trail, which is dotted with information points shaped like apples. At Brandegg station is your reward – a restaurant selling mouthwatering apple fritters.
Use the train and cable car to reach the start of this route, in Murren. From the station, follow the path along the railway track. You’ll pass beautiful waterfalls and the station at Winteregg, plus the farm shop and dairy where you can sometimes watch cheese being made. Arriving at Grutschalp, you can catch the cable car back to Lauterbrunnen.
