You'll often see the high peaks reflected in a clear mountain lake, where you can spend some time swimming or boating. In the foothills, you'll see castles, palaces and churches. For film fans, you can also have fun following in the footsteps of Julie Andrews on the Sound of Music Trail.

Music

Music is a big part of Austrian life as the country was the birthplace of several famous composers, including Mozart. Musical festivals take place throughout the year, the oldest being the Innsbruck Festival in July and August. You can attend concerts in venues that include ornate churches, theatres and castles. You might also hear the 500-year-old Vienna Boy's Choir perform, or visit the Saltzburg Festival in May, June, July or August.

Relaxation

Austria is home to many natural spas, where hot mineral waters bubble straight out of the ground. If you've never tried it before, experience the novelty of sitting in a thermal bath surrounded by snow and Alpine views. Afterwards, head to a coffee house for some rich, warming drinks. Try one of Austria's signature cake confections such as Sacher Torte or Apfelstrudel – chocolate cake and apple pie.
