Thanks to its proximity to mountain ranges, Madrid experiences pretty big fluctuations in temperature throughout the year. Summers are blisteringly hot – it’s not uncommon for the mercury to reach 40°C. As for winter, you can expect lows of just above freezing. Spring and autumn are short-lived, but they’re the best times to visit if you’re looking for comfortable, warm weather. These seasons do see a little more rain, though, so we recommend packing an umbrella.

You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. It’s also a good idea to get a European Health Insurance Card – or EHIC – before leaving Ireland. Though it’s not a substitute for travel insurance, it entitles you to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as Spanish nationals. It won’t, however, cover you for medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or non-urgent treatment.
