The weather in Austria varies depending on the region. In the east, where you’ll find cities like Vienna, things are pretty mild and there’s minimal rainfall. Head into the mountains, however, and you can expect much colder temperatures – especially in winter. As for the rest of the country, there are four distinct seasons. Most people visit in spring and autumn, when it’s dry and mild.

You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. It’s also a good idea to get a European Health Insurance Card – or EHIC – before leaving Ireland. Though it’s not a substitute for travel insurance, it entitles you to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as Austrian nationals. It won't, however, cover you for medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or non-urgent treatment.
