View All DealsOn a holiday to Pomorie, you can explore antique old towns, relax on the sandy beach, or slather yourself in good-for-skin mud at the lake.
Sea views are easy to come by in Pomorie, thanks to the fact that this pocket-sized town spreads over a headland that juts out into the Black Sea. For the very best vistas, make tracks for the old quarter. Wandering through here is like stepping back in time. Expect winding cobbled lanes bordered by terracotta-roofed bungalows and wood-panelled houses.
A fire in 1906 destroyed much of Pomorie’s history. Among the surviving monuments is the 19th-century Sveti Georgi Monastery. Outside, it’s fringed by a pretty garden filled with fig trees. Poke your nose inside and you’ll find colourful frescoes and traditional artworks. A 30-minute drive away from Pomorie, gets you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nessebar. With 3,000-year-old fortress walls, it’s one of the most-visited spots on the coast.
As well as being right on the Black Sea, the town also borders Lake Pomorie – a thin strip of sand is all that separates this enormous lagoon from the sea. It’s a magnet for wildlife – including birds, tortoises and lizards – and for locals who come here to treat their skin with the medicinal mud. The salt that’s extracted from it is also an important source of income. You can find out more about the process at the nearby Salt Museum.
