Spanish is spoken in the Dominican Republic. English is widely spoken on all islands, including Barbados and Jamaica.
There are more than 700 islands in the Caribbean, combining colonial old towns with sunny shores, dense rainforests, and a melting pot of fusion flavours. Holidays to the Caribbean give you the option to choose an island that suits you, with the islands of the Lesser Antilles and the Greater Antilles being especially popular due to their soft, sandy beaches.
Beaches in the Caribbean come in all shapes and sizes. You’ll typically find watersports enthusiasts up on the north-east shores of the islands. The breezy winds here create the ideal environment for surfing. South-west beaches are usually calmer. For example, Barbados’ ‘Platinum Coast’ is located on the west of the island, and offers around 20 kilometres of sands.
The Caribbean isn’t just about chilling out on the beaches. In fact, many of the islands offer wild adventures that really get the adrenaline pumping. Whether it’s zip-lining over the rainforests, taking a 4x4 drive through the volcanic landscapes, or scuba diving to famous shipwrecks, even the most adventurous of travellers will find something for them.
With a rich colonial history, Caribbean towns are a real blend of cultures and architectural styles. As former British colonies, Jamaica and Barbados feature old Georgian mansions. With English as the official language, it’s easy to chat with the locals. For a Spanish flair, the Dominican Republic is a great place to visit. Santo Domingo and Higuey boast European-style plazas and ornate basilicas.
