Slow down in Istria

Buje – pronounced ‘boo-yeh’ – feels like the kind of place you stumble upon by accident and then spend the rest of your life telling people about. Perched on a hilltop in Istria’s wine country, this pocket-sized town blends Medieval stone buildings and grape-laden vineyards with go-slow living. The gentle sound of church bells each morning, leisurely hillside strolls, and local cheese and olives for dinner are the order of the day when you holiday here.

A sun-warmed old town

Buje’s old town is a compact maze of stone alleys, Medieval arches, and sun‑bleached facades. It sits high above Istria’s rolling vineyards, so every viewpoint acts like a balcony over the countryside. St Servulus Church – a 16th‑century landmark – stands at the very top of the main hill, in place of an ancient Roman temple. It’s one of the town’s most visited historic sites, and inside, you can see centuries‑old art and stonework.

The Parenzana Trail

Keen walkers or cyclists will love the Parenzana Trail. Starting just outside the town, this hiking and biking route was once a narrow‑gauge railway, and today is one of Buje’s most scenic outdoor experiences. As you follow a path of railway stonework edged with Mediterranean flowers and wild herbs, you can expect to see a patchwork of landscapes, including vineyards, olive groves and forest.

Local wining and dining

Buje’s food and drink scene is pure Istrian indulgence – think truffle‑rich pastas, wood‑fired meats, and olive oils with a peppery kick. Local taverns serve Malvazija and Teran wines from nearby vineyards, while family farms offer samples of cheeses, prosciutto, and seasonal fruit and veggies. Despite Buje’s small size, there are plenty of restaurants in the town for a taste of local living.
