Cap Cana burst onto the tourism scene in 2001, and has been steadily making a name for itself as one of the hottest holiday spots in the Caribbean. Boasting a necklace of elegant, five-star hotels and resorts, not to mention a stylish marina packed with glamorous yachts, Cap Cana is a truly luxurious place to stay. With top-tier beaches, good food and a vast ecological reserve less than 20 minutes away, Cap Cana is one of the Dominican Republic’s top destinations.
Perching on the Dominican Republic’s eastern tip, Cap Cana is an ideal launching point for boat trips to the nearby islands. Isla Saona is perhaps the most famous, with its beaches taking centre-stage in the Bounty chocolate bar adverts. Alternatively, Isla de Mona is a relatively quiet location. Here you can explore huge barrier reefs and encounter fascinating marine life unique to the warm waters of the Caribbean.
Cap Cana is a great place to meet some exotic and fascinating marine life. At nearby Dolphin Island Park, you can take a swim with these friendly marine mammals. And if you time your trip for mid-January to mid-April, you can go whale watching out on the sea. Around 300 whales come to the Dominican Republic’s north-east coast every year to breed, and locals and tourists alike gather to watch this natural phenomenon. For the best chance of spotting one of these huge creatures, take a boat to nearby Samana Bay, one of the hottest breeding grounds.
