Crete is big on waterparks, but the king of the white-knuckle waterslide has to be Watercity in the Anapolis Hills. Meanwhile, at the beaches of Kokkini Hani and Malia, you’ll find pedalos, snorkelling, PADI scuba diving schools and jet-skis on offer. If boat trips are your cup of tea, head for the north-westerly harbour of Elounda. Its beach looks out towards Spinalonga — a ghostly island that doubled as a leper colony right up until the 1950s.

A range of hotels and villas

Sensatori Resort Crete, in the Heraklion region, lives life in the luxury lane. A king-sized pool and West End-style shows steal the limelight, and you can even check in to a swim-up room. Chania is home to the Louis Creta Princess Hotel, which sets out waterslides close to the beach. The Royal Belvedere is also stylish, but a lot more budget-friendly. A hilltop setting gives it A-plus country views.
