View All DealsHolidays to Koutouloufari offer a break in a traditional Greek village with a peaceful atmosphere. However, the lively resort of Hersonissos is just a 10-minute drive away, where you can visit theme parks and party along the Bay of Malia.
Koutouloufari was built among the olive groves, in the central region of northern Crete. It’s about 100 metres above sea level, so there are fine sea views over the Bay of Malia. Koutouloufari is a traditional village of old stone houses and cobbled alleyways, with only 600 or so residents. The tavernas serve fresh local food including calamari and swordfish.
Koutouloufari is inland from the seashore, but there are many beaches along the coast. Hersonissos offers three of the busiest beaches, but you'll find smaller, quieter coves within a 20-minute walk. From Hersonissos you can also enjoy jeep safaris, horse riding, and watersports such as diving and boat rental. There are also bikes, motorcycles, and cars to hire for trips to the nearby aquarium and waterparks. For a spot of culture, the Minoan Palace of Malia is an impressive site and less crowded than Knossos.
Evenings in Koutouloufari are given over to dinner, the longer the better. There are lots of traditional tavernas to choose from, and they're all cloaked in vines. As well as typical Greek and Cretan dishes, like cheese pies and smoked pork, you’ll also find a couple of Italian and Chinese restaurants. There are two or three quiet bars, and an Irish bar with music about a 10-minute walk away. For clubs and dancing though, it'll be back to Hersonissos.
