Milatos holidays are as energetic as strolling along a pretty harbour and dining at a handful of seafood tavernas.
A tiny sand-and-shingle beach and a cubbyhole of a port are the main features of sleepy Milatos. Its narrow streets are lined with traditional Cretan architecture. Milatos Bay will have you grabbing for the camera, but you might want to head east or west for sandier, bigger beaches.
Drive west for 20 minutes and you’ll find yourself in Sissi. This place has the same chilled-out vibe as Milatos, but on a slightly bigger scale. There are more restaurants to choose from, and a wedding cake-white stretch of sand. The sea is very calm and vodka-clear.
Don’t miss a visit to Milatos Cave. Hidden along a footpath, and flanked by olive trees, this cave’s got a surprise inside – a tiny, white church. It was built in 1935 in dedication to a group of Greeks who used it to hide from an invading army. There are no lights inside, so don’t forget to take a torch.
