View All DealsHolidays to Kefalos take you to a pretty hillside village with bags of history – and down at the harbour you'll find bars and tavernas, too.
This hillside village, 40 kilometres southwest of Kos Town, was the island’s first capital. These days it’s split into 2 parts. One of them is up on the hill, where the narrow streets are lined with charming old buildings and you’ll see the remains of a castle. Then, down on the coast, there’s Kamari, home to ancient basilicas, a beach and a marina dotted with yachts and fishing boats.
The sandy beach at Kamari is said to be the prettiest in all Kos – it’s certainly featured in enough travel brochures. From here you can swim or jet-ski out to Kastri, a rocky islet, complete with a blue-and-white church that featured in the film Mamma Mia! Back at the beach, you’ve all the amenities you’ll need, including loungers and umbrellas, and tavernas selling drinks and snacks.
You can drive to the capital, Kos Town, in 50 minutes. This lively place is packed with historic sites, including a 14th-century castle built by the Knights of St John. You’ll also see the oldest tree in Europe, under which Hippocrates is supposed to have taught. The old town, meanwhile, is packed with boutiques, tavernas and street stands selling freshly grilled meat. And in the middle of it all there’s bustling Eleftherias Square – the ideal spot for coffee and people-watching.
