You'll be travelling back in time on your holidays to Rhodes Town. This UNESCO heritage city is a medieval dream, complete with classic Greek Islands nightlife and shops like Zara and Sephora.
Set on the very northern tip of the island, Rhodes Town is its capital, doubling as both holiday resort and heritage hotspot. One part of the town is a well-preserved medieval walled city, while the newer town hosts hotels and resort facilities. The two elements offer a mix of contemporary bars and boutiques, as well as upscale restaurants and traditional Greek tavernas. An added bonus is the 400-metre shingle beach that's central to the town.
The old town is a genuine medieval walled city, built by the crusading Knights Hospitallers, or Knights of St John. Famous sights include the Street of the Knights which is lined with old inns. There's also the Palace of the Grand Master, and the Hospital itself, which now houses a very good archaeological museum where you can see marble statues and old metal artifacts.
If you're a history enthusiast, the sights in Rhodes Town could keep you going for days. These include classical Greek and Roman ruins on the Acropolis, and the harbour which used to be home to the Colossus. About a 15-minute drive out of town to the south-east you'll find Kallithea Springs. It's set in fine gardens around a lovely bay where you can swim and snorkel. You'll also find watersports centres, days out off-roading by jeep safari, and rock climbing for the adventure-seekers.
