The shoreline of Sorrento is a tad rocky, but there are plenty of lidos for swimmers — wooden platforms with direct access to the sea. Marina Grande even treats you to a small stretch of sand flanked by trattorias and shops.

Sorrento does a line in world-class pizzerias. Red-and-white checked tablecloths are a good indication of where you’ll find a first-class Margherita piled high with mozzarella and toppings. Linguini is another Sorrento favourite — and the fresh seafood is always excellent.

A day trip to Positano will whisk you along one of the most scenic coastal roads in Europe. The town itself is equally pretty, with lemon, coral and apricot houses climbing down the steep hillside to the beach.
