Lakes and mountains

If it's a lake and mountain holiday you're hankering after, Torbole is a great choice. Positioned on Lake Garda’s northern shore, the town has a spectacular view of the water and the dramatic mountainous backdrop.

Lakeside strolling

Torbole town centres around its harbour, which is surrounded by charming terracotta buildings and pretty squares. The lakeside promenade offers a great walk beside the water, and you can even make your way between the different lakeside villages. It’s the ideal way to stretch your legs and work up an appetite between delicious local meals. Watching the windsurfers and sailors while you stroll is an added bonus.

Head upwards for great views

Above Torbole is the hamlet of Nago. From this higher-up position, the views are stunning. You can reach the hamlet on a bus route, which leaves Torbole three times a day. Nago is a great place to relax, or to take advantage of the surroundings with a cycle ride or a walk.

Beaches

Al Cor Beach

Al Cor is a pebble beach with a grassy area. Facilities include snack bars and restaurants, plus showers and toilets. Sun loungers are available to rent, too.

Lido Blu

Like Al Cor, Lido Blu is pebbly with lawned areas. Torbole is known for its water sports, and you might be able to watch windsurfers or kite surfers out on the lake while you relax on a sun lounger here.

Shopping

Bargain buys

The market normally comes to town once a fortnight, from early morning to midday. It's a gift-hunter's paradise, with traditional Italian pottery, clothing and leather goods all available.

Mid-range buys

Torbole has a good selection of shops, with some of the tourist outlets that you might expect and a few more unusual places. There are a few surf gear and sportswear shops due to Torbole's popularity with water sports enthusiasts.

Designer buys

Along the promenade and the road into Riva, you'll find shops like Jack Wolfskin, Armani and United Colors of Benetton.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

Despite the party atmosphere in some of the bars, it's easy to find some tranquillity. The lakefront promenade is the place for a quiet evening stroll. There are plenty of relaxed and peaceful bars in town too.

Lively evenings

Torbole draws the water sports crowd every summer, and they like to party. Many bars have happy hours with live music in the evenings. Head out for an evening drink and you might come across a live band or a DJ working the decks.

Food & drink

Lakefront dining

Pizza and pasta are pretty ubiquitous in Torbole, but so are affordable prices. You'll find lots of informal cafés and restaurants on the lakefront, with views of the lake and the mountains too.

A meal in the hills

Step away from the eateries on the lakefront and up into the hills of Nago-Torbole beyond the town. You'll quickly come across more places to sit al fresco and enjoy a meal.

Getting about

Buses

A local service runs through town and to the hillside hamlet of Nago, a few minutes away. You can also get to Rovereto, Mori, Riva, Arco and Bolognano. Buses don't normally run on Sundays.

Passenger ferries

Steamers and hydrofoils run from Torbole to most of the other towns on the lake, including Riva (15 minutes), Limone (30 minutes) and Malcesine (50 minutes). Faster services run from Riva to the southern towns.

On foot

With wide, open piazzas, Torbole is easy to get around on foot. The lakeside promenade stretches for 3km all the way to Riva.

Walking

Walking to Riva

Follow the lakeside promenade towards Riva, stopping along the way to relax on the beach or watch water sports on the lake. Cross the River Sarca and pass the Monte Brione - the little mountain. Riva is home to lots of boutiques, restaurants and historic buildings. The walk takes about 40 minutes, and you can catch the bus or ferry back.

Torbole to Nago

Head inland towards the hamlet of Nago. Along the way, you'll have fantastic views of the lake and the Monte Brione. Once you've arrived at Nago, you could take a detour to see the Marmitte dei Giganti, a huge crater caused by a whirlpool in the last ice age. The route back takes you along the Santa Lucia Valley, past ancient olive groves and below the famous Penede Castle.
