A UNESCO-stamped centre

Rome’s entire city centre’s been given UNESCO-listed status, so it goes without saying that it’s steeped in history. The Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Capitoline Hill are a few of the must-sees. Elsewhere, you can walk in the footsteps of Romans at the Colosseum, or people-watch from the iconic Spanish Steps.

Vatican City

As the world’s smallest state, Vatican City is not to be missed when in Rome. St Peter’s Basilica looms over the skyline, and the surrounding square’s edged by Tuscan colonnades. Catch a glimpse of the Swiss Guards, who’s job is to stand and protect the Pope. Then, take a peek inside the Sistine Chapel – home to Michelangelo’s famous Renaissance fresco.

Bargain buys

If you’re in Rome over a weekend, don’t miss your chance to grab a bargain at the Porta Portese Market. It’s held every Sunday from early in the morning until early afternoon, and features a huge line-up of open-air stalls selling everything from books to clothing. We recommend arriving early to dodge the crowds.

Mid-range buys

Via del Corso is your go-to for high street shopping. It cuts straight through the city’s historic centre, so you won’t have a long walk to get there after a sightseeing session. Zara, H&M and Disney are just a few of the big brands who have set up shop here.

Designer buys

When you fancy a look around the city’s poshest shops, head to Via Condotti. Top Italian labels like Prada, Gucci, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana call this place home. Plus, you’ll find international brands like Cartier and Louis Vuitton in the mix.

Laid-back evenings

Rome’s brimming with wine bars, so you won’t have to look far to find one. If you fancy a low-key evening out, head for the Pigneto neighbourhood – a quick tram ride from the city centre. Here, you’ll be spoilt for choice on the cocktail bar front.

Lively evenings

Late-night parties are on the cards over in Rome’s Testaccio district. There are loads of clubs packed into this part of the city, and all the action’s just a 20-minute taxi ride away from the city centre.

Food & drink

Saltimbocca

Saltimbocca is a meat dish that’s been dubbed one of the must-try meals in Rome. It consists of parcels of veal, prosciutto and sage, tightly packed together then fried in butter and white wine. Look out for it on the city’s restaurant menus.

Carbonara

It’d be rude not to order a plate of classic carbonara while in Italy’s capital. Spaghetti tossed in olive oil is paired with whisked eggs, pecorino cheese and crispy cubes of cured pork. This dish is as simple as it is delicious, and you’ll find it on offer almost everywhere in Rome.

Coda alla vaccinara

If you fancy a change from pizza and pasta, order a hearty bowl of coda alla vaccinara, instead. It’s made with oxtail, carrots, tomatoes and red wine, with added pancetta, onions and garlic for a flavourful punch.

Pane di genzano

Pane di genzano is a soft, rustic bread with a sturdy crust. It’s named after the town it was invented in, and can only be produced in the region. Thankfully, you can pick some up from many of Rome’s bakeries, and you can sometimes customise it with your favourite topping.

Suppli

If you like arancini, you’ll love suppli. These balls of risotto rice, tomato sauce and stretchy mozzarella are Rome’s take on the Sicilian snack, and they’re a street food staple here.
