Holidays to Trelawny take you to Jamaica's sunny north coast, where sandy beaches meet historic Georgian towns. Trelawny boasts a natural, uninhabited reserve to the south with many endemic bird species. And up in the north, the city of Falmouth promises beachside fun.
Trelawny’s capital, Falmouth, is considered to be one of Jamaica’s best preserved colonial towns, with historic Jamaican Georgian architecture. The buildings around Water Square show off the classic features of this architectural style, with railed balconies, ornate columns, intricate panelling and sash windows.
Trelawny boasts no less than 10 white-sand beaches which are dotted along the coast. It’s also home to one of the country’s most famous natural wonders. The Glistening Waters is where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea, creating tiny microorganisms that emit a gentle glow after sundown.
Located in the south of Trelawny Parish, Cockpit Country is Jamaica’s biggest rainforest. It’s named for the huge number of caves, or cockpits, that can be found in the area. It’s an emerging site for eco-tourism, and is home to a number of endemic species that can only be found here, like the Cockpit Country frog.
If you’re looking to explore Jamaica's north coast, Trelawny makes an excellent base as it’s easy to reach some of the country’s best seaside destinations. From Falmouth, it’s just a 40-minute drive west to Montego Bay. And 40 minutes to the east is Runaway Bay, famous for its caves and flower forests.
