A teeny city

You’ll want to pack some comfy shoes for your trip to Luxembourg City – as one of Europe’s dinkiest capitals, the best way to get around is on foot. The city spreads out over two levels, and there’s an elevator to ferry you between them. The lower section, known as The Grund, shows off leafy gardens and canals lined with pastel-splattered houses. And, on the upper plateau, there are enough old landmarks to keep history buffs occupied for days.

Oodles of history

The city’s centre’s loaded with historic sites – so much so that UNESCO have slapped their stamp of approval on it. Notre Dame Cathedral’s one of the must-sees. It’s the only cathedral in the entire country, and it’s as good-looking as they come, thanks to its Gothic facade and stained-glass windows. You can even ogle sights underground here – Casemates du Bock, a network of subterranean wartime tunnels, is one of the city’s top tourist haunts.

A foodie favourite

Luxembourg City really rolls out the red carpet for foodies – it’s got more Michelin-starred restaurants per capita than any other city in the world. Plus, it’s home to people from more than 150 different countries, so it goes without saying that the food offering’s pretty varied. French and Italian fare are two firm favourites, though – loads of the fancy-pants eateries have built their menus around them.
