What’s more, it’s just 20 minutes from the hub of Cancun. So when it’s time to up the pace, you’ve got the country’s liveliest bars, restaurants and nightclubs on tap.

Water lover’s paradise

In Playa Mujeres, you’re never far from the water. On one side, a wetlands wildlife reserve offers up some pretty striking scenery, and plenty in the way of peace and quiet. Turn your gaze in the opposite direction, meanwhile, and the Caribbean Sea stretches off into the distance. Punctuating the horizon is the sandy mound that is Isla Mujeres, which floats just a few kilometres off-shore. Take a boat ride out here and it’s all about ice-white sands and reef-filled waters.

Lively daytrips

If you fancy heading further afield, you can choose between lively Cancun and laid-back Riviera Maya. Cancun, a 20-minute drive away, is a double-act of glitzy bars and shopping centres, versus downtown markets and rustic cantinas. Riviera Maya, meanwhile, is a tranquil stretch of coastline made for chilled-out beach living. The area’s scenic sands are an hour’s drive south from Playa Mujeres.
