Holidays to Puerto Calero take you to a purpose-built resort with a smart harbour. There are Blue Flag beaches within easy reach, and you'll get a warm climate all year.
You can fly direct from Shannon, Cork or Dublin to the iconic Canary Island of Lanzarote. Puerto Calero is named after its developer, who designed this upmarket marina resort in the 1980s. It's a quiet place to relax, though you're not far from the Puerto del Carmen nightlife and several Blue Flag beaches.
Millionaire’s Harbour is a huge marina where you can go to admire the luxury yachts. It's backed by a wide promenade where you'll find restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. Various boat trips depart from the marina, and you can learn underwater skills in one of its two diving schools.
You can get to the lunar landscapes of Timanfaya National Park in 25 minutes by car. This is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve where you can see the Fire Mountains, a plain pitted with over 100 volcanic craters. Just over 20 minutes' drive east will take you to the capital of the island at Arrecife. Here you'll find plenty of shopping choices, historic monuments and a wide variety of restaurants.
Lanzarote's most famous son was the artist and architect César Manrique. You'll find his art installations all around the island, including some underground caves that house a concert hall and chic bar. There's a Foundation dedicated to him at Tahiche, 15 minutes north of Arrecife, where he created a house from volcanic lava.
