Holidays to Beruwala combine a bold taste of Asia with Moorish architecture and laidback island life. This seaside Sri Lankan town is a great place to relax under the coconut trees.
Beruwala Beach is often called ‘Golden Beach’ by the locals, and it’s easy to see why. Overlooking the Laccadive Sea, this palm-lined beach offers soft, gold-coloured sands. Adventurous couples will love the huge range of watersports, like parasailing and windsurfing, and families will appreciate the warm waters which are great for kids.
A stroll around Beruwala’s harbour is not to be missed. Home to one of the largest fish markets in Sri Lanka, this port is bursting with energy and action. In the mornings, you can watch as the local fishermen bring in the catch of the day, which can be anything from tuna to shark. And in the afternoons, the sight of the colourful fishing boats all waiting for their next sailing is definitely worth getting the camera out for.
Beruwala is well served by the local train line, making it easy to check out more of the island. A popular daytrip is to the neighbouring town of Bentota, just a 12-minute train ride away. This coastal town is famous for its turtle hatchery, and for the wildlife that lives in the local lagoon, like monitor lizards, crocodiles, and kingfishers. Bentota is also one of the best places in Sri Lanka for diving, with a number of coral-rich dive sites including Canoe Rock and South Reef.
