Picture paradise, and the image that comes to mind will look a lot like a holiday to Marumbi.
Things chug along at a gentle pace in Marumbi, and that’s why it's such a winner for anyone searching for a bit of R&R. It’s far from being one of the best-known resorts in Zanzibar, so its easy-on-the-eye beach and quaint town centre promise a break from the hustle and bustle.
Thanks to the village’s rural setting, it’s easy to get a flavour of what Zanzibar’s countryside has to offer from here. A 30-minute drive is all it takes to get to the outer limits of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. It’s the island’s only national park, which makes it the go-to spot for seeing wildlife. Endangered monkeys swing from the trees, and there are more than 50 types of butterfly fluttering among the trees.
Marumbi has a pristine stretch of sand that runs from the top to the bottom of the village. Shortbread-coloured sands ruffle the shoreline, and thatched-roof villas, parasols and palm trees form a low-key backdrop. The whole area’s uncluttered and peaceful, so you can look forward to plenty of quiet while you flake out by Chwaka Bay.
