Jozani forest, Zanzibar

Prepare to become a super-fan of Zanzibar’s east coast, where Pingwe holidays come with postcard-perfect scenery.

Peace and quiet in Pingwe

Blaze a trail over to Zanzibar’s east coast and you might find yourself on the palm-studded Michamvi Peninsula, a sticky-outy bit of land home to a handful of peaceful villages. One of these, Pingwe, features a polo-mint-white beach, a host of traditional thatched huts, and a couple of luxurious beachfront resorts. It’s uber-quiet here – tip-top for a vacay featuring sun, sand, and snoozy afternoons.

The Rock

If Pingwe’s known for one thing, it’s a unique restaurant that goes by the moniker The Rock. And that’s because this white-walled eatery is built on a big rock, just off the beach. You can walk to it when the sea’s out, get a boat when the sea’s in – or even wade to it if you want to precede dinner with something adventurous. The menu shows off fresh-from-the-net seafood and spice-infused local dishes.

Swing by Stone Town

When you’re tired of that beach bum life, breeze over to some of Zanzibar’s touristy hotspots. Like the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town, where you can visit Darajani Market, the main bazaar in Zanzibar, as well as the House of Wonders, a former sultan's palace. Top tip – hire a car from the airport when you arrive to zip around the island easily. You can drive from the top to the bottom of Zanzibar in less than two hours.

Wonderful wildlife

Zanzibar’s just off the coast of Tanzania, and while there’s no safari here, this island’s defo got its fair share of wildlife. Make a beeline for Jozani Forest, Zanzibar’s national park. Red colobus monkeys and bush babies call this place home. Or, take a boat trip to Prison Island – AKA Changuu Island. Here, you can see free-roaming giant tortoises. A fee to visit the island goes towards the welfare of this endangered species.
