The towns of Koh Samui have a distinctly Thai feel, with street food stalls stacked up behind their beaches, and Buddhist temples tucked away in the backstreets.

Beaches and restaurants

The most popular sweeps of sand are in Lamai, Chaweng Beach and Maenam. These seaside towns come with a big helping of restaurants, and it’s not just local cuisine on the menu – steakhouses and Italian eateries offer an alternative to pad thai and spicy curries. You’ll find plenty of shops, too, stocked with essentials, like suncream, and Aladdin-style harem trousers.

Neighbouring islands

Koh Samui’s sister islands include Koh Tao, which is renowned for its dive sites, and Koh Phangan, where the Full Moon parties go on until sunrise. You can reach both easily – just hop on a ferry from the shorefront.
