Both Boston’s northern and southern shores boast postcard-perfect beaches, and it’s less than an hour’s drive to either side of the coastline. There are a few spots closer to the city though – manmade Constitution Beach is surrounded by pond-still water around a 20-minute drive from Downtown.

Revere Beach gets brownie points for being the city’s longest stretch. This crescent-shaped spot rolls out for more three-and-a-half miles around a 20-minute drive from the centre. A nature reserve sets the backdrop, plus it’s joined by a boardwalk that’s lined with bars and restaurants.

Bound Brook Island Beach is one of Cape Cod’s best-kept secrets. It’s around a two-hour drive from the centre of Boston, but well worth the driving distance for quiet beach days.

Haymarket is Boston’s oldest outdoor market, with its first stalls set up almost 300 years ago. It’s easy to spot – the stalls are covered in colour, with fresh produce, fish and flowers all giving it a glow.

Faneuil Hall is made up of a trio of historic market buildings, with a shop-lined promenade separating them. You’ve got all the big names from America’s shopping scene along here. That’s not all though – there’s a list of world-famous restaurants to choose from, so you’ve got lots of options for drinking-and-dining breaks in between buys.

Designer boutiques are Newbury Street’s bread and butter. The shops around this side of town spread out over eight blocks, with discount shopping malls and made-to-measure boutiques both forming part of the shopping scene.

The Waterfront district’s your best bet for low-key nights out in Boston. Cocktail menus and harbour views make up the recipe for relaxed evenings around here.

Downtown Boston’s the place to be for big nights out. There’s something to suit all around here, from classy cocktail bars to buzzing Irish pubs – and everything in between. If you’re not quite ready for last orders when the bell chimes, you’ve got a choice of nightclubs where you can continue the party until late.

This creamy soup is dished up in a big bowl on a bed of clams, potatoes and onions. Black peppers added for a spicy kick, while some versions throw in diced bacon or pork for a saltier take.

Boston’s beer fans can’t get enough of this tipple – it’s the Boston Beer Company’s number-one brew. Taste-wise, you’re looking at something somewhere in between a lager and an ale.

This dish is native to New England. It’s made with lobster meat which is cooked up in butter, lemon juice, salt and black pepper before being stacked in a hot-dog style bun.
